Story

During World War II , during the Tunisian campaign in April 1943, French troops drove the Germans out of the small Tunisian town of El Ksour . In the safe of the city bank were a large number of gold bars worth six billion francs . Since there was not a single living soul left in the town, a special van was sent to transport this gold to a safe place - the rear city of Sfax - accompanied by two trucks and a jeep with thirty French legionaries for escort and protection.

When the convoy arrived, it was suddenly almost completely destroyed by the German unit - the 4th company under the command of Captain Ulrich Dieterle (Pierre Zeml), which is unknown how it ended up in the local fortress. Only four survived: Non-Commissioned Officer Eduard Mayuzar (Michelle Constantin), Sergeant Pierre Oganier ( Jean-Paul Belmondo ), Legionnaire Boissier (Michelle Creton) and Soldier Borzik. Hiding in the building, at night they found the surviving artilleryman, Corporal Beral ( Jacques Villere ), from the battery of the Marine Corps, destroyed in this city in another battle by the Stukoy - the German aircraft Junkers .

Under cover of darkness, non-commissioned officer Mayuzar and a soldier Borzik try to pick up ammunition from the surviving truck, but the Germans fire at them and kill Borzik. Dressed in the uniform of the murdered German scouts, Sgt. Oganier and gunner Beral freely make their way to the surviving French howitzer. With several accurate shots at the fortress, they managed to destroy the German unit.

In the morning, after burying the dead legionnaires at the local cemetery, the four ended up in a bank, where Oganier and Boissier proposed to divide all the gold into four. Mayuzar, who threatens them with a military tribunal, categorically does not agree with this. Suddenly, its director Francois Laroche-Freon enters the bank. But he came not alone ...
