Chekhova, Maria Pavlovna

Maria Pavlovna Chekhova ( July 31 [August 12] 1863 , Taganrog - January 15, 1957 , Yalta ) - sister of A.P. Chekhov . The teacher, artist, creator of the A.P. Chekhov House-Museum in Yalta . Honored Artist of the RSFSR (1953).

Biography

She was born on August 19 ( August 31 ), 1863 in Taganrog (now Rostov Region ). In 1872 she entered the Taganrog Mariinsky Gymnasium . After the ruin of the family in 1876 and the move to Moscow, she completed secondary education at the Filaret Women's Diocesan School in 1884. In 1882-1885 she studied at the higher female courses prof. V. I. Gerier [1] . In 1886-1904 she taught history and geography at the private Moscow girls' gymnasium L.F. Rzhevskaya . In 1903 she received a gold medal on the Stanislavsky Ribbon for “Eagerness for Education”.

M.P. Chekhova was seriously engaged in painting . In the 1890s, she studied painting at the Stroganov School and in the private studio of A. A. Khotyantseva . In painting, she was assisted by V. A. Serov , K. A. Korovin , I. I. Levitan .

In Melikhovo she helped brother A.P. Chekhov in the construction of schools, the treatment of peasants, and chores. After his death, she devoted her life to collecting and publishing her brother's literary and epistolary heritage.

In 1914, M.P. Chekhov donated the personal belongings of Anton Pavlovich to the Taganrog Museum, and also attended the opening and consecration of the new library and museum building in Taganrog, designed by a friend of A.P. Chekhov, Academician F.O. Shekhtel .

Since 1922 she was the permanent director of the A.P. Chekhov Yalta House-Museum created by her.

In 1935, together with Olga L. Knipper-Chekhova, she came to her hometown in Taganrog to participate in festivities dedicated to the 75th birthday of A.P. Chekhov . Taganrog school number 2 was named after A.P. Chekhov.

On July 14, 1944, for many years of work to preserve the Yalta House Museum and publish the literary heritage of A.P. Chekhov, the Soviet government awarded MP Chekhov the Order of the Red Banner of Labor . [one]

M.P. Chekhov died on January 15, 1957 in Yalta from a heart attack .

She was buried next to her mother E. Ya. Chekhova in Yalta at the city cemetery.
