Baia Sprie ( Roman Baia Sprie , Hungarian. Felsőbánya , German Mittelstadt ) is a city in the north-west of Romania , in the Maramureş County .

Content
History
The first written mention of the city dates back to 1329. Traditionally, Baia Sprie has been one of the most important mining centers in northwestern Romania. The extraction of gold and silver in these places is mentioned in written sources dating back to 1411, when the Transylvanian Saxons colonized the region. According to the 1910 census, 93.8% of the population called Hungarian the native language , and only 5.2% named Romanian. From 1919 to 1940 was part of the Kingdom of Romania. From 1940 to 1944 - as part of Hungary. In 1944, it again became part of Romania.
Geography
Located about 9 km northeast of the city of Baia Mare .
Population
According to the 2011 census, the population of the city is 15,476 people. According to the last census of 2002, it numbered 16,609 people [1] . 73.13% of the population are Romanians ; 16.81% - Hungarians ; 3.92% are gypsies [2] .
