Mikhail Semenovich Bernshtam (born 1940) is a demographer and economist. Member of the human rights movement. Employee of the Hoover Institute (USA) [1] .

Biography
Leningrad State University graduate, historian, art historian and orientalist [2] . Around 1969, the Children's Art School-1 (DHSH-1) began working as an art critic and head teacher.
Participated in the human rights movement in the USSR. In the 1970s, the author of uncensored articles and studies. The works were distributed by samizdat .
Arrested in 1973. From May 3 to December 3, 1973 he was detained in the Novocherkassk Psychiatric Hospital [3] , according to other sources, he was in a psychiatric institution in Rostov-on-Don , from where he was released in 1974. In 1976 he became one of the founders of the Moscow Helsinki Group [2] , was its member for about two months [4] .
In 1976 he emigrated to the United States. He edited valuable materials in a series of " Studies of Modern Russian History " (INRI), founded by Alexander Solzhenitsyn on Russian history of the 20th century. But later, in the words of Solzhenitsyn, “he left for American science, completely behind the series” [5] . Mentioned as one of the witnesses of the "Gulag Archipelago" [6] .
Researcher at the Hoover Institute for War, Revolution and Peace at Stanford University. In 1989, he worked as a visiting professor of economics at Monash University ( Victoria , Australia ), and in 1997-1999 as an associate professor in Stanford University's Overseas Studies Program.
Bernstam's current scientific interests relate to the field of economic demography. His focus is on the role of centralization in income redistribution in the diversity and evolution of economic systems, long-term economic growth, social revolutions, conflicts and other social changes. In recent years, Bernshtam's research has focused on the causes of economic growth and recessions in countries with former centrally planned economies, with particular emphasis on Russia , China, and the former East Germany .
In 1991-1995, Bernshtam served as an economic adviser to the Russian parliament , the Central Bank of Russia and the Russian Government on several political projects. He is a regular commentator on issues of the Russian economy and finance at Radio Liberty , Voice of America , and the BBC .
