History
The third folio exists in two versions: the initial edition of 1663 repeated the First and Second folios . In 1664, it was supplemented by the publisher Philip Chetwind, who was married to the widow of R. Allot, the owner of the rights to the Second Folio [1] . He added seven plays to the collection: Pericles, Lokrin, The London Mot, Puritan, Thomas Cromwell, Sir John Oldcastle and The Yorkshire Tragedy. Of these plays, only Pericles was recognized as belonging to Shakespeare, and it was established in the canon [2] . The 1664 edition is considered much rarer than the First and Second folios, since most of the print run died in the Great Fire of London in 1666 [3] .
Textology
Publishers planned to accurately repeat the Second folio, but the design changed: for example, Milton's dedication was published on one page (and not on the back, as in the previous edition). The addition of 1664 took 100 pages. The extended edition was popular: even the Bodleian library sold its copy of the First folio when the Third appeared [4] .
W. Black and M. Schaaber revealed 943 editorial corrections in the Third folio compared to the Second, not counting the changes in punctuation and the correction of obvious typographical errors. The bulk of the fixes spelling modernization. Scene III of the fourth act of the comedy “ How You Like It ” was also corrected, but these edits are not reproduced after the publication of the 1733 edition of Theobald [4] .
