Freestyle wrestling competitions in the framework of the 1952 Olympic Games in heavy weight (over 87 kilograms) were held in Helsinki from July 20 to 23, 1952 in the “Exhibition Hall I”.
The tournament was held on the system with the accrual of penalty points. Penalty points were not accrued for a clear victory, a wrestler received one penalty point for a victory on points, for any defeat (on points with a score of 2-1, with a score of 3-0 or a net loss) - three penalty points. The wrestler, who collected five penalty points, was eliminated from the tournament. The three remaining wrestlers reached the final, held meetings with each other. Fight under the rules of the tournament lasted 15 minutes. If the carcass was not recorded within the first ten minutes, the judges could identify the fighter who has the advantage. If no one was given an advantage, then six minutes of wrestling were appointed on the ground , with each of the wrestlers being at the bottom for three minutes (the order was determined by a draw). If one of the wrestlers was given the advantage, then he had the right to choose the next six minutes of struggle: either on the ground or in the rack. If after six minutes there was no clear victory, then the remaining four minutes the fighters fought in the rack.
In the heavyweight fight 13 participants. The undoubted favorite of the competition was the Swedish wrestler Bertil Antonsson , the vice-champion of the previous Olympic Games, the European champion in 1946 and 1949, the world champion in 1951. He predictably reached the final part of the competition, where he collided with 40-year-old Soviet sports veteran Arsen Mekokishvili .
The fight began to be extremely calm. However, soon her measured move was unexpectedly interrupted for the Swedes by a lightning run made by Arsen. Antonsson was in the pit. Then the fight continued in the alternate pit - the opponent's favorite position (Antonsson) , where more than one head bowed under the pressure of his powerful hands and he literally rubbed his opponents with shovels into the carpet. Antonsson fought first by lot. He was waiting for this moment to spend his perfect perfomance during trainings and an extension coup perfectly secured in competitions with a neck grab from under the far shoulder with a leg wrapping around the same name. This technique, he once laid on the shoulder blades of many heavyweights of the world. Arsen got to the high floor. Antonsson rushed at him from above, trying to bend Arsen’s neck down and knock him to the side. But Arsen stood firmly, like a rock, all 3 minutes without moving from the spot. Had to swap places. Arsen repeatedly performed the throw by grabbing his arms and legs from the side, but the Swede managed to escape by throwing over the carpet. At the end of the orchestra, Antonsson does not feel tired, still fresh. The fight continues again in the rack. But under the unstoppable onslaught of the Soviet wrestler, the Swedish athlete retreats, trying to defend himself by caring for the carpet, and almost at the end of the fight Arsen spends sticking the hook on the opposite leg from the inside. The final whistle catches the northern giant below, stubbornly defending against another attack in the stalls.
Since Mekokishvili won the remaining finalist Ken Richmond in the third round, this victory brought the gold medal to the Soviet wrestler. In the meeting for second place, Antonsson confidently defeated Richmond.
