Tyler, Varro Eugene

Varro Eugene Tyler ( English Varro Eugene Tyler ; December 19, 1926 , , Nebraska - August 22, 2001 , West Lafayette ) [3] - a professor of pharmacognosy and philatelist who specialized in the study of fake postage stamps and biographies of the falsifiers that created them .

Academic career

Varro Tyler graduated from the University of Nebraska with a degree in Pharmacy in 1949, worked at Yale University as a fellow researcher at Eli Lilly and Company, and earned his and Ph.D. degrees from Connecticut University in 1951 and 1953.

V. Tyler has been appointed and head of the Department of Pharmacognosy at the University of Nebraska and held similar positions at the University of Washington . In 1966, Tyler accepted the appointment of Dean of the Department of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at Purdue University and was closely associated with Purdue University for the rest of his career [4] [5] [6] .

His research interests included medicinal and toxic components of higher fungi, phytochemical analysis, alkaloids biosynthesis, the cultivation of medicinal plants and herbal medicine.

In his opinion, “true herbalism encompasses scientific trials, honest reporting of the results obtained and the safe use of effective medicinal herbs by informed practitioners and the public.” He was opposed to what he called “ paraherbalism ” , or “herbalism based on pseudoscience” [7] .

Varro Eugene Tyler originally specialized in Japanese postage stamps and studied fake classic Japanese stamps [8] [≡] .

Varro Tyler has been Chairman of the Fake and Fake Stamp Committee of the American Philatelic Society from its inception in 1992 until 1998. Tyler also taught at the American Philatelic Society on the topic of “Detecting Fake and Fake Stamps.”

Honors and Prizes

The activities of Varro Tyler in the field of philately have received well-deserved recognition from the philatelic community:

  • In 1998, Tyler was awarded for outstanding philatelic research on behalf of the American Philatelic Society.

Selected Works

Due to his interest in the study of counterfeit brands, V. Yu. Tyler became an expert on this issue and wrote extensive literature on this topic, including:

  • Philatelic Forgers: Their Lives and Works , published in 1976 and reprinted in a new revised edition in 1991;
  • Focus on Forgeries: A Guide to Forgeries of Common Stamps , published in 2000, which is a selection of his articles published in his Focus on Forgeries section in Linn's Stamp News [≡]

V. Tyler is a co-author of several monographs on fake Japanese postage stamps:

  • “Forgeries and Imitations of the Dragon Stamps of Japan” (“Counterfeiting and Imitation ”); came out in 1971.
  • “The Wada Cherry Blossom Forgeries” (“Sakura Releases - Vada's Fakes”); published in 1974 [9] .
  • “The Koban Forgeries of Japan” (“Counterfeiting Japan Brands of the Koban Type”); saw the light in 1979 [10] .
