Biography
Kyle Carpenter was born in Flowood , Mississippi , on October 17, 1989. He studied at the W. Wyman King Academy High School in Batsburg , South Carolina , from which he graduated in 2008. In February 2009, he joined the United States Marine Corps at the Columbia recruiting center and completed a basic combat training course at the Perris Island Marine Corps Depot in the same year [1] .
Participated in hostilities in Afghanistan in 2010, where he was seriously injured, after which he underwent rehabilitation at the National Naval Medical Center , which lasted more than two years [2] .
After his discharge from military service for health reasons in July 2013, Carpenter entered the University of South Carolina in Colombia [2] [3] .
Military Service
After completing the course of the young soldier, and then the Camp Geiger Marine School at the Camp Lejeun Marine Corps Military Training Center in North Carolina , as a private first class , Carpenter was included in the Fox Company , 2nd battalion of the 9th Marine Regiment , 1st Regimental Combat Group of the Marine Corps , 1st Division of the Marine Corps where he served as a machine gunner from September 2009 to November 2010.
In July 2010, a junior corporal Carpenter was sent to the Marjah region of Helmand Province in Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom . On November 21, 2010, during a battle with a Taliban detachment, Carpenter was seriously injured by an enemy's hand grenade [4] [5] , which fragments damaged his face, right arm, and deprived his right eye [2] . Carpenter himself, in his own words, does not remember in detail what happened on the roof during the battle, when he and his friend were injured, but witnesses and the results of the investigation indicate that he rushed to the grenade in an attempt to protect his friend and colleague younger corporal Nick Ufracio from the explosion [2] [6] .
Subsequently, Kyle Carpenter underwent about 40 operations in 2.5 years [7] and describes this as the most difficult period of rehabilitation, which “never seemed to end” [2] .
Medal of Honor
On June 19, 2014, an award ceremony was held at the White House in Washington State , in which President Barack Obama, on behalf of the congress, was honored to present to the younger Corporal Kyle Carpenter the highest US military award - the Medal of Honor [8] .
“The youngest corporal of the United States Marine Corps, William Kyle Carpenter. For outstanding courage and bravery, shown at risk to his own life, over the demands of duty, while serving as the gunner-gunner of the Second Battalion of the Ninth Marine Regiment, First Regimental Combat Group, First Marine Division, First Expeditionary Marine Corps, Helmand Province in Afghanistan, as part of Operation Enduring Freedom on November 21, 2010. The platoon deployed a base of action for the Dakota intelligence unit two days earlier, in a small village in the Marjah area, with the goal of obstructing the enemy’s activities and ensuring security for the local population of Afghanistan. The younger Corporal Carpenter and his colleague took their positions on the roof of the military escort around the perimeter of the Dakota base, when the enemy launched an attack using hand grenades, one of which fell into their position. Without hesitation and with complete disregard for his own safety, the younger corporal Carpenter moved toward the grenade in an attempt to protect his colleague from a deadly explosion. When the grenade exploded, his body took the brunt of it, having suffered serious injuries, but thus preserving the life of his colleague. Demonstrating bravery, dedication to duty and unshakable fighting spirit in the face of almost inevitable death, the younger corporal Carpenter deserved honor and respect, and personifies the higher traditions of the United States Marine Corps and Naval Forces.
