Geography

Griega Island is located near another island - Shikotan . The island has the shape of a comma with a "head" in the north. The length of the island is about 2 km, the width is from 0.4 m to 1.3 km. The coasts are mostly rocky and steep 50–80 m high. In the eastern part there is a gentle slope along which streams flow into the ocean. Shikotan and Grieg islands are separated by a narrow strait, with a width of about 300-400 meters [3] . In the strait and around the island there are rocks and reefs.

Flora and Fauna

A wildlife sanctuary has been established on the island to protect local seabirds. Before organizing the reserve, hunters destroyed a population of red foxes [4] . A small colony of black-tailed gulls ( Larus crassirostris ) nests on the sea side of the island [4] .

Forests and shrubs are absent, the entire surface of the island is covered with grassy meadows [5] .
