Biography
Ernst Eber was born on November 3, 1817 in the city of Grenoble . Eighteen years old, he came to Paris to study law, but, fascinated by painting, entered the capital's school of fine arts, in which his main mentors were first David d'Angers , and then Paul Delaroche [7] .
Having received the Roman Prize in 1839 for the painting “ Joseph ’s Chalice Found in Benjamin’s Bag” and executed in the same year, painting “ Torquato Tasso in the Dungeon” (was placed in the Grenoble Museum), he went as a pensioner to the French government to Italy , where he stayed instead of the usual five for about ten years [7] .
In Italy, he became addicted to the image of Italian folk life, noting in him, like Louis-Leopold Robert , predominantly sad features and presenting them with a greater reality than this artist. One of his first paintings of this kind, which was very successful, “Malaria” (1850), is imbued with a melancholic, painful and poetic feeling, which manifests itself more or less strongly in the works of Eber following her. The best of the canvases of these genres are “Girls from Alvito ” (1855), “Sant'Angelian Fienarolls Selling Hay at the Gates of the City of San Germano ” (1857), “Chervarki” (1859); “Gypsy Rosaner at the Fountain”, “Stone Bench” (1865); The Black Pearl (1865); “Autumn Leaves” (1869) and “Morning and Evening of Life” (1870) [7] .
According to most critics, Eber’s few experiments in the field of religious painting are less successful, such as “The Kiss of Judas” (1853), “Mater dolorosa”, “Saint Agnes” (1881) and several colossal figures in the Paris Pantheon [7] .
The portraits of Eber, on the other hand, received very good reviews, especially the portraits of high-class ladies ( Princess Clotilde , the ladies in the ballroom closet, etc.) and children who were “surprisingly elegant and individually animated in his painting, although the excessive softness of the brush somewhat damaged the dignity of these works ”, as well as sometimes the genre paintings of Eber [7] .
From 1867 to 1873 he was director of the French Academy in Rome and from 1874 was a member of the French National Institute .
Anton Auguste Ernst Eber died on December 5, 1908 in the city of La Tronche .
In Paris, there is the Eber House Museum (closed for reconstruction for many years), a branch of the Orsay Museum . Another Eber Museum is located in his villa in the alpine resort of La Tronche .
