The freestyle wrestling competitions in the framework of the 1952 Olympic lightweight championship (up to 67 kilograms) were held in Helsinki from July 20 to 23, 1952 in the Exhibition Hall I.

The tournament was held according to the system with the accrual of penalty points. For a clear victory, no penalty points were awarded, for a victory on points the fighter received one penalty point, for any loss (on points with a score of 2-1, with a score of 3-0 or a pure defeat) - three penalty points. The wrestler who scored five penalty points dropped out of the tournament. The three remaining wrestlers reached the final, held meetings among themselves. The battle according to the tournament regulations lasted 15 minutes. If no carcass was recorded within the first ten minutes, then the judges could determine the wrestler with the advantage. If no one was given an advantage, then six minutes of fighting in the stalls were appointed, with each of the wrestlers being down for three minutes (the order was determined by lot). If one of the wrestlers was given an advantage, then he had the right to choose the following six minutes of struggle: either in the ground on top, or in the rack. If after six minutes a clear victory was not recorded, then the remaining four minutes, the wrestlers fought in the stance.

In lightweight 23 participants fought. The undisputed favorite in this weight category was Ulle Anderberg , European champion in 1949 featherweight, world champion in 1951, and in addition, vice champion of previous Olympic games, European and world champion in Greco-Roman wrestling (all in featherweight). Anderberg and American wrestler Tommy Evans , as well as Iranian Tofig Jahanbakht , inferior to them in penalties, reached the final. Anderberg successively defeated both of them and in the final meeting only the fate of the silver medal that Evans won was decided.
