History

The musical "Phantom of the Opera" by Ken Hill was the first musical and stage embodiment of the eponymous novel by Gaston Leroux [1] [2] . This production was a good financial success, and also inspired Andrew Lloyd Webber to create his own musical [3] [4] [5] .

The idea of creating a musical came to Ken Hill after reading a book that he came across in a store. He wrote the script. Work on the project began in Morkama , where the first version of the musical was staged [6] . The music was written by composer Jan Armit . The world premiere of The Phantom of the Opera took place on July 26, 1976 in Lancaster . The production immediately became a hit, but differs from subsequent versions [7] .

In 1984, Hill revived his musical in Newcastle , adding to the score the music that sounded at the end of the 19th century at the Garnier Theater. To do this, he abandoned the modern music of Jan Armit, used in the first version of the production.

Throughout the remainder of the 20th century, the musical was very popular, it is especially worth noting the production of St. Louis in 1987 and the subsequent tour of the USA from 1990-1995, in which the musical visited several 110 cities in America for several years, and also looked to neighboring Mexico and Canada. In 1990, the premiere of the only production of a musical translated into a foreign language took place in Oslo. Also in 1991-92, the musical went to the Shaftesbury Theater in London, which meant that in the same city there were two musicals with the same name “The Phantom of the Opera”.

In the 21st century, mainly all musical productions were in Japan, except for a 2000-2001 UK tour and several amateur productions.
