Peoples and religions of the world

The encyclopedia was prepared with the participation of a large team of authors, the bulk of which were specialists from the N. N. Miklukho-Maklai Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology of the Russian Academy of Sciences , and was published in 1998 by the Big Russian Encyclopedia publishing house. ^[3] The basis for the encyclopedia was the historical and ethnographic encyclopedic reference book “ Peoples of the World ” published in 1988 by the publishing house “ Soviet Encyclopedia ”. ^[2]

In addition, an electronic version of the encyclopedia ^[3] was launched on the site of the compactbook multimedia publishing house “CompactBuk” with the support of the Open Society Institute , which was then posted on the site of the Rubricon Information and Encyclopedia project ^[4] , where the total number of articles amounted to 2634 titles of which: 1262 articles in the section “Peoples of the world”, 490 articles in the section “Religions of the world”, 125 articles in the dictionary of ethnological concepts, 757 terms in the ethnographic glossary, and also about 2000 illustrations. ^{[3] [5] The} electronic version was supplemented by new materials provided to the project by the staff of the N. N. Miklukho-Maklai Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, as well as the Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography (Kunstkamera) and other scientific institutions. So the section “Religions of the world” was supplemented by an article by S. I. Weinstein “Shamanism (shamanism)”. In addition, review articles written for the electronic version were published by P. I. Puchkov, “Divergence of languages ​​and the problem of correlation between language and race,” O. E. Kazmina, “The Confessional Composition of the Population of Russia,” M. N. Kudryavtsev, “Experimental research methods in the system of historical sciences ”, as well as a number of reference articles devoted to memorable dates, festive rites and rituals of certain religions. P. I. Puchkov compiled the classifier "Religions, their directions and trends, the most important denominations." ^[3]
