Title

At the foundation, the city was called Egitna . Then, in the X century BC. e. Cannes was known as Canua , meaning height . There is also speculation that the name Canua comes from the canna plant.

The French name of the city ( French Cannes ) is pronounced [kan] (with a clear, not nasal sound "a"); it should not be confused with the city of Caen ( French Caen ) in Normandy, whose name is pronounced with the nasal sound “ã”, but it sounds very similar to the Russian ear.

History

Cannes until 1910

Located on the site of Cannes, a settlement called Egitna ( Greek Αίγιθνα ), according to one version, was founded by the Romans in 42 BC. e. , according to another version - ligurs in the 2nd century BC. e. Residents were mainly engaged in fishing, and the latter were used as a port for trade with the Lerins Islands . In 69 AD e. - the year of the four emperors - Egitna became the scene of fierce clashes between the forces of Oton and Vitellius . In 891, the city was captured by the Saracens . Called Canua ( French Canua ), the city remained in their power until the end of the X century.

The fortress built in 1035 allowed the monks who settled in the region to successfully defend the region. Around 1530, the city managed to get out of the control of the church and gain relative independence. Outside Provence, Cannes was little known until the 19th century .

In 1834, the former English Chancellor, Lord Henry Peter Broome , was forced to linger in Cannes due to the cholera epidemic [10] . Lord Broom was so fascinated by the beauty of this French town, its sky, mild climate, that he decided to build a house in Cannes. Many English aristocrats followed suit. Soon Cannes discovered wealthy subjects of the Russian Empire. In 1879, the city was visited by Empress Maria Alexandrovna , wife of Alexander II , accompanied by the sons of Sergei and Paul. In 1888, Guy de Maupassant wrote of Cannes: "Princes, princes, princes everywhere."

Heraldry

Coat of arms of Cannes

The coat of arms of the city of Cannes is a blue heraldic shield , diagonally crossed by a silver palm branch, on both sides of which are two golden lilies .

Once, Lerinsky Abbey had a coat of arms depicting a silver palm tree on a blue shield in accordance with tradition, according to which St. Honoratus banished the snake with a palm branch. In 1030 , when Cannes was presented to the abbey, the letters “C” from Canna and “A” from abbatia appeared in the coat of arms. In 1633, the consuls changed the letters to royal lilies in order to please the representative of the king Marquis Saint-Chamonix ( Fr. Melchior Mitte de Chevrières ). In 1696, in the Great Collection of Coats of Arms of France Charles d'Ozier ( fr. Charles d'Hozier ) was first recorded modern coat of arms of Cannes [11] .
