Geography
This territory was formed due to sediment brought by the river, and this process continues to this day. So, during the formation of the county, it included, in particular, Yunlunsha Island, which at that time was separated from the Chongmindao Island of Chongming County by a wide channel. However, at the moment, this canal has virtually disappeared (only an irrigation canal remained from it), and Yunlongsha Island has become, in fact, the northern part of Chongmindao Island. Nevertheless, from an administrative point of view, this territory continues to remain under the jurisdiction of Qidong, there are two of its villages.
History
For a long time there were shoals of the Yangtze mouth, connected with the mainland only in the era of the Qing Empire. Therefore, in the Qing era, they were administratively part of the neighboring counties, and only in the days of the Republic of China, Qidong County (启东 县) was created here in 1928.
In 1949, the Nantong Special District (南通 专区) was established, and the county became part of it. In 1970, Nantong Special District was renamed to Nantong County (南通 地区).
In 1983, Nantong City and Nantong County were disbanded, and the Nantong City District was formed.
In 1989, Qidong County was transformed into a city county.
Administrative Division
The city county is divided into 11 villages and 1 parish .
