History

The National Museum of Military History was created in 1916, two years later the Military History Commission of the museum was created, which included an archive, exhibitions and a library. By then, it was one of only three Bulgarian museums.

In 1949, the Museum was renamed the Central Museum of the National Army. In 1950-1951, the museum was moved to another building - on General Skobelev boulevard, d. 23, where its area expanded significantly. In 1952, the museum opened a new exhibition. Since 1956, restoration workshops began to work in the museum.

In 1967, an agreement was signed between the governments of Bulgaria and Hungary, according to which the Museum of the First Bulgarian Army [1] was opened in the Ε iklos Castle on the territory of Hungary, which became a branch of the Sofia Museum. In 1989, this museum was closed.

Since 1971, the museum began publishing the scientific journal Proceedings of the National Museum of Military History. In 1975, for its activities in the field of science, education and culture, the National Museum of Military History was awarded the Order of Class I β€œSaints Cyril and Methodius”.

Since April 2001, the National Museum of Military History moved to 92 Cherkovna Street.

The current structure of the museum and its name date back to 1968 [2] .
