The heroes of the work are two poor artists, Magursky and Svyatetskiy. Magursky is engaged to a girl from a good family, but rejected due to extravagant behavior. Everything changes when one of his paintings “Jews on the Babylonian Rivers” receives an award in a Paris competition. The award brings him fame and money, as well as success with women. Ultimately, the artist finds happiness in marriage with a charming actress who has long been in love with him. The work is a satire on the environment of the bourgeoisie and an interesting characteristic of representatives of artistic bohemia.
