Story
The work depicts the funeral of the villagers visiting shooter [committing suicide]. [6]
The story is on behalf of the villager. Starting with reporting a misfortune [7] :
Oh, the trouble happened terrible!
We never knew one like this ...
- The narrator further describes the trial and burial of the deceased. At the same time, the peasants themselves, despite all their dislike for the “alien” and “hostile” to them “outside world” (where the shooter came from), forgive a suicide. [7] [8] [9]
Work Structure
In the book of V. V. Zhdanov “Nekrasov” the following review is given about the beginning of the poem [10] :
Between the high loaves lost
Our poor village ...So begins the story of a rural resident, a hunter, a story that has become a song, because here in the very order of the verse, in its size it seems that a song melody is already laid.
- Zhdanov V.V. Nekrasov.
With the folk song brings the work and the use of specific vocabulary ("nauseous," "soon", etc.). At the same time, he has much in common with the fantastic form of the narration, which is noticeable in the wide use of colloquial words and phrases (for example, “did not know”, “reckless head”, “confused”), in the emotionally colored manner of the peasant's conversation (“Court arrived ... interrogations ... toshnekhonko ... / We guessed to collect some money ... "), etc. [7] [11]
From the history of creation
The romance is based on the poem “Funeral” by N. A. Nekrasov. [2] [12] [13] As one of the researchers of the poet’s creativity notes, Nekrasov wrote down his poems from June 22 to 25, 1861 (according to the autograph left, the work was created in Greshnevo ). [14] First published in Sovremennik magazine (1861, No. 9) [15] .
In 1911, N. A. Alexandrov shifted the poem to music [15] [16] .
Artists
The song has become extremely popular in the performance of Lydia Ruslanova. [17] Various critics noted a special emotionality and characteristic drama, which appeared precisely in the Ruslan processing of the work. [18] [19] [20] One of the authors described his own feelings about what he heard:
The extremely slow, mournful tempo in the song “Between High Loaves Lost”, conveying an extreme degree of hopelessness, allows you to listen and think about each phrase of the song, to experience the tragedy of what happened with the singer.

The song also gained fame thanks to performances by artists such as Vadim Kozin [21] [22] , Ivan Skobtsov.
