History
Sureya Pasha began the construction of the building of the cultural center in 1924 in Kadikoy, the ancient district of Istanbul (Turkey), located in the Asian part of the city, to hold urban cultural and social events there. During his visits to Europe, he was impressed by the charm of the famous European theaters. Their architectural appearance influenced the appearance of the Turkish theater. The foyer of the building was designed in the style of the Champs Elysees Theater in Paris , and the style of German architecture was reflected in its interior. By order of the deputy head of Istanbul, Sureya Ilmen, Kegham Kavafyan was appointed the architect of the building under construction. The construction of the building was completed in 1927 [1] . A theater called "Sureya Opereti" ( English Süreyya Operetta ) was opened in the building on March 6, 1927. He was the first in the Asian part of Istanbul and the sixth in the city [2] [3] .
Since the stage of the constructed theater was not completely completed, musical performances at the end of the building were not staged there at all. A few days a week there were only theatrical performances . In 1930, a screen was installed in the building and the building was renamed the Sureya Cinema . The first director of the cinema was appointed Hikmet Nazym, the father of the famous poet Nazim Hikmet [3] .
In the ballroom of the building on the second floor, a wedding banquet hall worked for many years. Since 1959, the theater troupe Kadikey Reception has been operating in the building for five years. Then a sewing workshop worked in the building [4] .
In 1950, Sureya Ilmen donated funds to the Darüşşafaka Cemiyeti charitable organization for the education of orphans and died in 1955. His wife Adalet Ilmen (Adalet İlmen) died in 1966 [3] .
The auditorium of the Sureya cinema was reconstructed in 1996, and its technical equipment was modernized in 2003. The exterior of the building is made in accordance with the original plan of the architect [3] .
Redevelopment
In early 2006, the head of the municipality of Kadikoy, Selami Öztürk, began redevelopment of the building [5] . The restoration included frescoes on the ceiling and on the walls, and sculptures on the facade . Construction lasted almost two years, and the cost of work amounted to about 14 million Turkish liras (about $ 9 million) [6] .
Sureya Opera House was opened on December 14, 2007 by the performance of the oratorio Yunus Emre (Opus 26) of the composer Ahmet Adnan Saigun . Sureya Pasha’s dream of creating an opera house came true 80 years later [6] .
The theater stage has a height of 14 m, a width of 10 m and a depth of 4.90 m. The auditorium seats 570 people [7] The hall on the second floor can accommodate 500 guests. [6] .
The Istanbul State Opera and Ballet Theater performs at the Opera House. Opera and ballet performances are held here three days a week [4] . The building also hosts celebrations, festivals and other social events.
