Sakonnakhon ( Thai. สกลนคร ) - province ( Changvat ) in the north-eastern part of Thailand , in the Isan region.

The administrative center is the city of Sakonnakhon .
History
Until about the XIV century, the province was part of the Khmer Empire . Subsequently, with the fall of the empire and the eastward movement of the states of Ayutthaya and Sukhothai , the provincial lands ceded to them [1] .
Geography
The province is located in the northeast of the Isan region, about 500 km northeast of Bangkok . The total area of the province is 9605.8 km² and takes 19th place in terms of area among all regions of the country.
In the north it borders with the provinces Nongkhai and Byngkan , in the south - with the provinces of Kalasin and Mukdahan , in the east - with the province of Nakhon Than , in the west - with the province of Udon Thani .

The province is located on the Korat plateau. On the territory of the province is Lake Nongkhan - the largest lake in the Isan region. Also through the territory of the province passes the mountain system of Phuphan .
Administrative staff
The province includes 18 amphees , which in turn consist of 125 tambons and 1323 mubans .
Population
As of 2015, the province has a population of 1,142,737. The population density is 119 people / km². The female population is almost equal to the male [2] .
Transport
In the province there is a joint-based Sakonnakhon Airport, serving commercial air transportation of the provincial capital city of Sakonnakhon .
There is no railway connection in the province.
