Biography

Born into a musical family (his mother was a musicologist and worked at the State Philharmonic of the Estonian SSR), from childhood he studied piano and flute .

Due to his refusal to stop performing rock music, he was forced to leave his studies at the Tallinn College of Music . He performed military service in Tallinn in an army ensemble.

In the second half of the 1960s, Jaak was the bass player and soloist of various Estonian bands and ensembles, his first radio recordings also date back to that time. In 1970 he won the republican contest of the Komsomol song, a year later - the competition of young pop singers.

He was the lead singer of the ensembles “Lainer” and “Radar”.

In the 1970s, he repeatedly received prizes from various contests and song festivals. His highest achievement was winning a special jury prize at the international song contest in Sopot in 1975 . He collaborated with the largest Soviet pop composers - David Tukhmanov , Alexander Zatsepin , Raymond Pauls and others.

On the eve of the new 1979 year , the premiere of the musical television movie “June 31” was held on Soviet television, in which several songs were performed by Yaak Joala. Since that time, the singer has gained enormous popularity.

In the 1970s and 1980s, the singer toured a lot, participated in festive concerts, and starred in several musical films (concert film "Olümpiaregati tähed / Stars of the Olympic Regatta" ( CT and ETV , 1980), "Jaak Joala. Estraaditähestik" ( Eesti Televisioon, 1981), Teisikud / Doubles (Eesti Telefilm, 1982), and others) and television programs ( Morning Mail , Blue Light ...), has repeatedly become the laureate of the Song of the Year television festival.

Joala masterfully mastered various musical instruments and sometimes he himself played instrumental parts on the records of his own songs - records of his performance on the piano, flute, guitar, and percussion were preserved.

Muslim Magomayev wrote about the singer in the newspaper "Soviet Culture" (No. 35 for 1981):

Artistic appearance, catchy, it’s the pop style of singing, without a touch of vulgarity, sometimes pretending to be “pop specificity”, without stamps, copying someone and something. And most importantly - the voice is bright, sonorous, filled, which he freely owns; strong singing breath, which not every vocalist possesses - all this attracts him. Yaak Yoala sings beautifully, excitedly, as they say, on the nerve.

Since 1988, Yaak left the Soviet stage, and in the mid-1990s, he practically stopped concert performances.

After leaving the stage, he taught guitar at the Tallinn College of Music.

In 2000, he was one of the founders of the Estonian Union of Artists , an organization that protects the copyright of Estonian musicians. He headed it for several years.

In 2002, on TVS in the author’s cycle of Sergei Kostin's “Comet Tail”, a program about Yaak Joal was broadcast.

He was engaged in producing young singers [2] , taught vocals.

In 2005, he suffered a first heart attack, in 2006 - a stroke and a second heart attack. May 17, 2011 was hospitalized in the cardiology department in connection with the third heart attack.

He died on September 25, 2014 . He was buried at the Forest Cemetery in Tallinn.

The first wife is Doris, from her son Yanar and granddaughter Carmen. The second wife, Maira, had no children in this marriage.
