Biography
Born in the city of Gouda . He studied under his father-in-law - Lancelot Blondel. Later he lived and worked in Bruges , where he was admitted to the guild of St. Luke in 1543. Died there.
Creativity
He painted historical religious paintings and portraits.
Religious canvases, for example, “The Last Judgment” , the triptych “Descent from the Cross” (both - Groeninge Museum, Bruges), the triptych “The Last Supper” (Bruges Cathedral), “The Resurrection of Christ” (Louvre) - are distinguished by clarity of composition, simplicity and certainty modeling of figures and diligence of execution. But they are somewhat cold and conditional in color, although they are similar in this to the works of his contemporary portrait painters - Anthony Mohr and Jos van Kleve.
More successful and famous were his portraits: portraits of the spouses Fernagant (Groeninge Museum), a portrait of a red-bearded man (Vienna Gallery), a portrait of the city burgomaster (Bruges Museum).
