Endel Aruja ( Est. Endel Aruja ; July 5, 1911 - February 4, 2008) is a Soviet and Estonian physicist who worked in the field of X-ray crystallography , an encyclopedist , a librarian and a popularizer of librarianship, as well as an expatriate activist [2] .

Born in Soontaga , Valgamaa County , he graduated from elementary school there. He received secondary and higher education in Tartu - he graduated from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences of the University of Tartu . In 1938 he received a master's degree in natural sciences. Until 1939, he worked as an assistant in the physical laboratory of Tallinn Technical University , then received a scholarship from the British Council and entered Cambridge University , where in 1943 received a Ph.D. in physics. In 1962 he moved to Canada.
Expatriate activity
Aruja was a member or founder of many Estonian organizations in the UK and Canada, edited and distributed periodic publications for them. Contributed to the writing of some articles by the British on Estonian topics. From 1972 to 2004 he was the first secretary of the Tartu Institute in Ontario [3] .
Since 1986, Aruia has organized the replenishment of Estonian libraries with books in Estonian published abroad; earlier, due to the iron curtain, libraries could not afford these copies. In total, the number of books delivered to various libraries by him amounted to more than 7 thousand boxes.
As an archivist and librarian, Aruja collected a large amount of archival material, forming one of the most extensive cultural compendiums of Estonian expatriates. These materials occupied eight rooms with a total area of about 236 square meters.
Awards and honors
- 1990 - Honorary doctorate from the University of Tartu
- 1998 - Order of the White Star, Grade 5
- 2002 - a medal from the library of the University of Tartu
- 2003 - an honorable color ribbon from the Estonian student organization Rotalia!
