Konitsa [3] ( Greek Κόνιτσα [2] , arum Konita ) is a small town in Greece . It is located amphitheater at an altitude of 600 meters above sea level [1] , on the slope of Mount Trapezitsa in the Pinda mountain range, at the exit from the valley of the Aoos River ( Vyosa ), overlooking the Konitsa Plain, where the tributaries Voidomatis and Sarandaporos flow into Aoos , near the border with Albania , 44 kilometers north of Ioannina , 197 kilometers west of Thessaloniki and 344 kilometers northwest of Athens . The administrative and commercial center of the community of the same name (Dima) in the north-eastern part of the peripheral unit of Ioannina in the periphery of Epirus . The population of 2942 inhabitants according to the 2011 census [2] . An area of 54.506 square kilometers [1] .

Konitsa is a regional center for many villages and towns in the Pind region. The city is a starting point for tourists who want to explore the Pind Mountains. In addition, the following areas located next to Konitsa are of interest:
- Vikos Aoos National Park;
- Mount Zmolikas ;
- Cavasilon thermal baths ( Λουτρά Καβασίλων ) and in Amarandos ( Λουτρά Αμάραντου );
- historical areas of Zagori and Chase .
On the western outskirts of the city runs the national road 20 Kozani - Ioannina.
Content
History
The city was captured by the Turks during the Sultan Murad II (1421-1451). In the XVIII century, under the Ottoman rule , the first Greek school was founded in Konitsa, after visiting Cosmas of Aetola , in which several scientists worked as teachers, among them Eioros Mostras ( Γεώργιος Μόστρας , born 1794 in Arta ) [4] . Konitsa was liberated from Ottoman rule on February 23, 1913 during the First Balkan War . During the First World War, Italians occupied Konitsa in May-September 1917. In the Italian-Greek war of 1940-1941, Konitsa suffered greatly, and a significant part of it was burned when the Italians retreated. Konitsa was also a battlefield during the Civil War , in December 1947, which ended in the victory of the armed forces of Greece .
The Konitsa community was created in 1919 ( ΦΕΚ 184Α ) [5] .
