Biography and Research
Born in 1944 in the city of Ovruch ( Ukrainian SSR ). [1] He lived with his parents in Riga . He studied at the music school. Emil Darzin (in the same class with Solomon Volkov ), then at the Riga School of Music. In 1966 he graduated from the Faculty of Philology of the University of Latvia . Participated in Pushkin's circle L. S. Sidyakova (together with E. Toddes and R. Tymenchyk ). He was friends with A. D. Sinyavsky .
In 1974 he emigrated from the USSR to Israel . He worked at the Department of Slavic Studies of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem (in 1981-1985 - Professor). Editor series Slavica Hierosolymitana. Slavic Studies of the Hebrew University (with D. Seagal, O. Ronen, and others.) [2] [3]
From 1985 - Professor at Stanford University (1991–1994 - Head of the Department of Slavic Studies). Editor of Modern Russian Literature and Culture, Studies and Texts (with Joan Delaney Grossman, Robert P. Hughes, Simon Karlinsky, John E. Malmstad, Olga Raevsky-Hughes); Stanford Slavic Studies (with Joseph Frank, Gregory Freidin, Richard Schupbach). [four]
He also taught at the University of California, Princeton, Yale, Prague, Latvian Universities, RSUH, etc. [5]
Guggenheim Fellowship (1987). [6] Humboldt Prize (1994-95).
Research Interests
- Study of Boris Pasternak. I chose this topic as a student. Author, editor of many books and articles about the life and work of Pasternak.
- The study of the culture of the Russian emigration of the first half of the 20th century. He prepared separate editions of works by S. Bart , B. Bozhnev , L. Gomolitsky .
- Pushkinistika.
- Scientific publishing. Editor of several series of scientific journals on Slavic.
