Baran’s chair is a special chair rotating horizontally to study the vestibular apparatus . During the rotation of the subject, jerky eye movements called nystagmus reflexively occur. As a result, an untrained person loses orientation in space. After the chair stops, the speed of termination of nystagmus is used to judge the state of the vestibular apparatus [1] . The Barani chair is used in the selection for aviation, medical examination of pilots, astronauts, people whose work takes place at altitude.
It consists of a seat, a vertical handle with which the chair is untwisted, handrails and steps. There are advanced Baran chairs - with an electromechanical drive, stand-chairs with pendulum stimulation. Proposed by the Austrian scientist Robert Barani .
