Biography
Lapenna was born in the city of Split in Croatia (later in Austria-Hungary). In 1933 in Zagreb, he received a Ph.D. in 1947, became a professor at the University of Zagreb, then in London. Having left Yugoslavia in 1949, he lived in Paris, since 1951 - in the UK. In 1962, he became a British citizen. Ivo Lapenna died in 1987 in Copenhagen, where he was buried.
He was married three times. The first wife is Emilia Lapenna, the second is Ljuba Lapenna, the third is Birthe Lapenna (since 1986). Ivo Lapenna had no children in marriage.
During the work of Lapenn as president of the association, various conflicts arose. He was accused of a personality cult, dictate, etc. In these conflicts, Lapenna prevailed. But during the congress in Hamburg in 1974, he announced that he was resigning as president of the Esperanto Association. The committee elected Humphrey R. Tonkin as the new president. Lapenna refused all honorary titles in UEA and TEJO. The events that took place at the congress were interpreted as a “communist coup”.
In 1983, Lapenna became one of the founders of AIS San Marino. He also became one of the founders of the specialized association of Esperanto lawyers.
