Baron Burton of Burton upon Trent and Rangemore in Staffordshire is the ancestral title in the United Kingdom Peer system .
History
The title of Baron Burton was created in 1897 for the famous brewer , philanthropist and liberal politician Michael Bass, 1st Baron Burton (1837-1909). Earlier, the titles of Baronet ( 1882 ) and Baron Burton ( 1886 ) were already created for him. The Bass family comes from William Bass (1717-1787), who founded the Bass & Co brewing business in Burton upon Trent in 1777 . His grandson, Michael Thomas Bass (1799–1884), turned the company into one of the largest breweries in the United Kingdom . He also represented the Derby in parliament from the Liberal Party for thirty-five years (1848–1883) and was involved in charity work in the city of Burton . However, Michael Thomas Bass refused the baronet and peer titles offered to him.
His eldest son, Michael Arthur Bass (1837-1909), was also associated with the family business (Bass, Ratcliff, Gretton and Co), and sat on the Liberal Party in the House of Commons from Stafford (1865-1868), East Staffordshire ( 1868–1885) and Burton (1885–1886). Like his father, he also did charity work in Burton. In 1882, the title of Stafford’s Baronet was created for him in Staffordshire ( United Kingdom Baronetry ). He received the title in honor of his father (who was still alive then), with the right of inheritance for his younger brother Hamar Alfred Bass. In 1886, the title of Baron Burton of Rangemore and Burton upon Trent in Staffordshire was created for Michael Bass. In 1897, he also received the title of Baron Burton from Burton-on-Trent and from Rangemore in Staffordshire . After the death of Lord Burton in 1909, the title of a baronet was inherited by his nephew, Sir William Bass, 2nd Baronet (1879-1952). In 1952, after the death of the latter, the title of baronet from Stafford died.
In 1909, after the death of Michael Arthur Bass, 1st Baron Burton, the title of Baron Burton of Rengemore was interrupted, and the title of Baron Burton of Burton upon Trent and Rangemore was inherited by his daughter, Nelly Lisa Bailey, 2nd Baroness Burton (1873— 1962). She was the wife of Colonel James Evan Bruce Bailey (d. 1931 ) from Dochford in Inverness Shire. After the death of her first husband, she remarried to Major William Eugene Melles (d. 1953 ). Her oldest son from her first marriage, the Honorable George Evan Michael Bailey, was the foreman of the British army, and was killed during World War II. Therefore, Lady Burton was succeeded by her grandson, Michael Evan Victor Bailey, 3rd Baron Burton (1924-2013), son of the Honorable George Evan Michael Bailey. He was a member of the Inverness Shire County Council and the Inverness County Council, and also served as Deputy Lieutenant from Inverness Shire.
