Biography
A member of the noble family Lomellini, the son of Andreola Spinola, was born in Genoa around 1519 .
Nothing is known about his youth and the beginning of his state career. It is known that he belonged to the so-called "old nobility", opposed to the "new" - advanced after the re-gaining independence by Genoa in 1528 . Janotto was elected the doge of Genoa on October 10, 1571 . His election candidates were his relative Francesco Lomellini and someone from the Doria family (a supporter of the "new nobility").
Like its predecessors, the new Doge had to deal with constant conflicts between the factions of the Genoese nobility. In addition, the reign of Lomellini had to pacify Corsica after the unsuccessful rebellion of Sampiero Corso . Doge convinced Corso’s son Alfonso to return from France and voluntarily surrender to the Genoese.
The mandate of Lomellini expired on 10 October 1573 . He died in 1574 in Genoa. His body was buried in the chapel at the end of the right nave of the church of Santissima-Annunziata de Sturla.
