The draft year is 1980 (first round, No. 6). The second most successful defender in the history of the NHL (after Ray Burke ) - 1531 points (396 + 1135) in the regular championships of the NHL . Record holder for the number of goals scored by a defender in one season of the NHL regular season - 48 in 1985/1986; before that the record belonged to Bobby Orr - 46). Played in League 21 season. Four- time Stanley Cup winner (1984, 1985, 1987, 1991). Three times recognized as the best defender of the NHL ( Norris Trophy - 1985, 1986, 1995). 14x participant in the NHL All-Star Game . Three-time winner of the Canada Cup (1984, 1987, 1991). Finalist of the 1996 World Cup. Participant in the 1990 World Cup . He completed his playing career in 2001 . In 2004, he was inducted into the Toronto Hockey Hall of Fame .
Played for: Edmonton Oilers , Pittsburgh Penguins , Los Angeles Kings , Detroit Red Wings , Carolina Hurricanes (Hartford Whalers), Chicago Blackhawks , Philadelphia Flyers and Boston Bruins .
Game Style
He was distinguished by excellent skating technique, high starting and distance speed, and good technique. He was famous for his jerks with a puck from “gate to gate”. But at the same time, unlike the well-known attacking defenders of the previous generation (Denis Potven, Bobby Orr) and his (Phil Housley, Al Makinnis, Ray Bourke), he was less versatile and often lost his position when jerking and connecting to attacks, which made him create a whole Edmonton Oilers' 80s gold safety net and Pittsburgh Penguins early 90s.
Due to a number of injuries during the game for Los Angeles, the Kings noticeably lost in speed and its performance dropped significantly, but the game became more versatile and reliable in defense.
