Roman province of the Pennine Alps around 120 BC e.

Pennine Alps ( lat.Alpes Poenninae ) - a province of the Roman Empire , one of three small provinces located in the Alps on the border of modern France and Italy .

The main task of the authorities of these provinces was to maintain the order of roads through alpine passes. The Pennine Alps bordered on Narbonne Gaul in the west, the Cotta Alps in the south, Upper Germany in the north and Italy in the east. According to legend, through the St. Bernard Pass in the Pennine Alps, Hannibal entered Italy . This is where their name comes from ( lat. Poenninae from the Roman name for the Carthaginians lat. Poeni ). Titus Livy reports that the name comes from the name of the local deity Pennin [1] . In the year 15 BC e. Emperor Octavian Augustus conquered this territory and founded a province with the capital in Augustus Pretoria Salassorum .
