The first Taft model was the F10 , which appeared in 1974. It was equipped with a 1.0-liter (958 cc) gasoline engine and a four-speed transmission with a two-speed transfer case . The F10 was available in short-wheelbase (SWB) and hardtop versions. The Daihatsu Taft SUV had versions with a metal and fabric top, and later a pickup version appeared.
Around 1977, the F10 was replaced by the F20 series with a 1.6-liter (1587 cc) 12R gasoline engine. Around the same time, the F50 version appeared with a 2.5-liter DG diesel. Both models had an improved transmission and were available in SWB versions of softtop and hardtop, either four- or six-seater. In 1979, the F20 and F50 versions equipped with a sunroof appeared as the F25 and F55 models. Around 1983, refined F20 / F25 models became available simultaneously with the optional Deluxe version and the optional five-speed gearbox. At this time, the F50 / F55 models were replaced with the F60 / F65 with a 2.8-liter DL diesel, with the same Deluxe model and the optional five-speed gearbox. In Europe, Giovanni Michelotti sold a luxuriously equipped version of the Taft, a version of the later Bertone Freeclimber . [one]
Between 1981 and 1984, Toyota sold the Taft as a Toyota Blizzard . Equipped with a 2.2-liter L diesel, the LD10 Blizzard was the same optional Deluxe model outfitted as the Taft.
In 1984, the Taft / Scat models replaced the Daihatsu Rugger (Fourtrak in the UK, Rocky in Australia and most European markets). In Indonesia, the subsequent Daihatsu Rugger / Rocky / Fourtrak continued to use the name Taft.
