The early years

Mangal Pandi was born July 19, 1827 in a brahmin family from the Bhuinhar caste in Nagva, located near Faizabad in the west of the modern state of Uttar Pradesh . In 1849 he began serving in the army of the East India Company , but his career ambitions conflicted with his religious feelings [1] . He served in the 6th company of the 34th Bengal native regiment, was distinguished by high growth (according to legend, had a 2.7-meter growth) [2] .

Rebellion

At the beginning of 1857, rumors of new cartridges with a shell soaked in pork and cow fat began to spread in the shelves of the Indian native infantry. To load a weapon, it was necessary to tear it with teeth, which offended the religious feelings of Muslims and Hindus (the cow was a sacred animal in Hinduism , and the pig was unclean in Islam ). In February, the first riot broke out. On March 29, Mangal Pandi openly called for an uprising in Barrakpur, a garrison town near Calcutta [3] [4] and began shooting at British officers [5] . The call found a response among the sepoys and they refused to arrest him on the orders of the general. However, a full-fledged uprising did not work, and Pandy tried to shoot himself, but only wounded himself. On April 6, he was sentenced to death, and hanged on April 8.

In Memory of Mangal Pandi

Park " Shahid Mangal Pandi Maha Udyan" is named after Mangal Pandi, at the place where he attacked British officers and was hanged in the territory of the Northern District 24 pargans [6] . In 2005, director Ketan Mehta directed the feature film The Rising: Ballad of Mangal Pandey with Aamir Khan as Mangal Pandi. In the TV series Queen Jhansi , Arav Chowdhary played a cameo role of Mangala Pandi.
