Alonissos National Marine Park, Northern Sporades ( Greek Εθνικό Θαλάσσιο Πάρκο Αλοννήσου Βορείων Σποράδων, ΕΘΠΑΒΣ ) is a national park located along the eastern coast of Greece . It is the largest marine protected area in Europe , and covers an area of (2.260 km²) [1] .

The territory of the national park includes the island of Alonissos (64 km²), as well as 6 small islands: Peristero (14 km²), Kira Panaya (25 km²), Jura (11 km²), Psatura (0.76 km²), Piperion (4 , 2 km²) and Scandzura (6.2 km²); also includes 22 uninhabited islets. The park is located in the Northern Sporades . It was formed by presidential decree of May 16, 1992 to protect the white-bellied seal ( Monachus monachus ).
Content
History
Thomas Schulze-Westrum, a German zoologist and creator of documentaries about animals, during his stay on the Greek islands and after a series of studies in 1976, noted the ecological and biological value of the territories by proposing a protected area.
Fauna
In 2003, according to various estimates, from 40 to 250 individuals of the white-bellied seal lived within the park [2] [3] . More than 300 species of fish inhabit the waters of the reserve, and whale dolphin ( Delphinus delphis ), striped dolphin ( Stenella coeruleoalba ), common grind ( Globicephala melas ), sperm whale ( Physeter macrocephalus ) and very rarely killer whale ( Orcinus orca ) are found in the waters of the reserve.
