Biography

Paul-Andre Duroche was born on May 28, 1954 in Windsor, Ontario. He was the son of Maurice Duroche and Lucille, nee Duplentier. In addition to him, the family had six more children. After his birth, his parents moved to Timmins. Here he received primary and secondary education. In 1977 he defended his bachelor's degree in musicology at the University of Western Ontario in London . He continued his education at St. Paul's Seminary in Ottawa, where he defended his degrees in 1981 with a bachelor's degree and in 1985 with a master's degree in theology. Earlier, in 1981 he defended his bachelor's degree in education at the University of Ottawa [1] .

On July 2, 1982, he was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Timmins. In 1992 he became a licensor of civil canon law at the University of Strasbourg in France. In 1996, he became a licensor of sacred theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. Over the years of serving as a parish priest in the Diocese of Timmins, he also taught in high school, compiled teaching aids on religious disciplines, moderated and administered various parishes, oversaw the activities of diocesan youth, pastoral care, and the office [1] .

On November 15, 1960, Pope John Paul II appointed him auxiliary bishop of Sault Ste. Marie and nominated him to the titular bishops of Absuagi. The bishop’s consecration was led on March 14, 1997 by Jean-Louis Pluff, bishop of Sault-Saint-Marie, who was served by Bernard-Francis Papin, titular bishop of Aradia and Jacques Landriol, bishop-emirite of Timmins. He lived in Sadbury, overseeing the Francophone parishes of the diocese. He served on the Education and Social Affairs Commission of the Assembly of Catholic Bishops of Ontario. He was also a member of the Francophone Sector Commission of the Canadian Episcopal Conference [1] .

On April 27, 2002, he was appointed Bishop of Alexandria-Cornwall. He ascended to the department on June 17, 2002. In 2002 - 2008, he served as chairman of the Education Commission of the Assembly of Catholic Bishops of Ontario. In 2002-2004, he chaired the Theological Committee of the Canadian Episcopal Conference. From 2005, he was a delegate to the Eucharistic Synod of Bishops [1] .

On October 12, 2011, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him Archbishop of Gatineau, after which he was elected Vice President of the Canadian Episcopal Conference. November 30 of the same year officially ascended to the department. In September 2013, he was elected President of the Canadian Episcopal Conference. In October 2014, he took part in the Extraordinary Synod of Bishops for Family Issues. Since March 2014, he has been a member of the Pontifical Council for Culture [1] .
