Biography

Mikhailo Mesarovich was born on July 2, 1928 in the city of Zrenjanin , Yugoslavia .

He received a bachelor's degree from the University of Belgrade (Faculty of Electrical Engineering) in 1951. In 1955 he received a Doctor (degree) of a doctor in technical sciences from the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts.

From 1951 to 1955, Mesarovich was a researcher at the Nikola Tesla Institute in Belgrade . From 1955 to 1958 he was the head of the inspection department of the institute. At the same time, in 1954-1958, Mesarovich held academic positions at the University of Belgrade. In 1958, he became a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he worked until 1959. [1] He was also an associate professor at Case Western Reserve University from 1959 to 1964 and a professor from 1964 to 1978. In 1965-1968 he was the head of engineering systems, from 1968 to 1972 - the head of the technological department, in 1968-1978 - the director of the research center. Since 1978, Professor Mesarovich is a professor of systems engineering and mathematics. One of his students was Roger W. Brockett. [2]

Mesarovich gave lectures in more than 60 countries of the world, advised governmental, including international organizations, and was widely published [3] . He was the founder of the journal "Mathematical Theories of General Systems".

In 1999, he was appointed supervisor of the global planet change team. In this position, he dealt with issues of climate change, the economy, population, and the education of women in developing countries [4] .

In 2005, he was awarded the Hovorka Prize of the Western Reserve University . [3]

Work

His research interests include issues of complex systems , the theory of global change and sustainable development of human resources, hierarchical systems, theories of large-scale systems, mathematical theories of general systems, multi-level systems, systems biology , world and regional modeling. In the field of mathematics, he is considered the founder of the mathematical theory of coordination and multilevel hierarchical systems.
