About the album
Famous composer Jerry Herman specifically for the movie adaptation of the musical Hello, Dolly! prepared two new songs that were not part of the original Broadway play. The new ballad "Love is Only Love" was based on the instrumental version of the song "Gotta Be A Dream", which Herman wrote for his 1961 musical Madame Aphrodite [2] . He rewrote "Gotta Be A Dream" as "Love is Only Love" in 1966, for his musical Mame , but the song did not eventually become part of the show [3] . In 1969, Herman made the next version of the song specifically for Streisand for the film Hello, Dolly! . He also wrote the song “Just Leave Everything to Me” for Barbara, which replaced “I Put My Hand In” from the original production.
Soundtrack album Hello, Dolly! came out at different times in three different versions. It was originally released on 20th Century Fox Records in 1969 as a "deluxe album". In the early 1980s, PolyGram acquired 20th Century Fox Records, and all records were given under the direction of Casablanca Records . At the beginning of 1982, the soundtrack was re-released on Casablanca Records. For many years, the soundtrack is Hello, Dolly! was Streisand's only album not available on CD . In 1994, Philips (the parent company of Polygram) first released Hello, Dolly! on cd. By 1994, Polygram owned the rights to the original album, as well as to the 20th Century Fox archival musical elements that were used to create the album. The producer of the CD version of the album, Nick Redman, insisted that the new version of the album be created from the original multi-track recordings , and not just digitized from the original records. At the moment, Polygram is absorbed into the Universal Music Group [4] .
Commercial Success
In the US album chart Billboard 200, the disc debuted on November 15, 1969 at 177th place. February 7, 1970 the album reached its peak - No. 49. Although the album spent more than 8 months on the chart, it became a commercial failure, not having been awarded the RIAA certification.
The album released two singles. The first, Before the Parade Passes By / Love is Only Love , was released in December 1969 via Columbia Records. On September 24, 1969, Streisand specially spent the day in the studio to record new versions of two songs from the soundtrack, with the aim of their subsequent release as singles. One of these songs was Before the Parade Passes By. The new version was arranged by Peter Matz and produced by Walter Gold . Barbara performed this version during a series of concerts taking place in Las Vegas in the summer of 1969. Simultaneously with the release of this single, 20th Century Fox Records released the promo single Hello, Dolly! with stereo and mono versions of the song. Single version of "Hello, Dolly!" was shorter than the landscape and contained an alternative vocal track.
