Biography

Born on May 2 ( May 15 ), 1911 in Bakhmut (now Donetsk Oblast , Ukraine ). Boris's father, Lev Abramovich, was a doctor. Graduate of Kharkov University. In 1910, he returned to his hometown to practice medicine there.

Boris's mother, Evgenia Abramovna, graduated from the Gymnasium plus one year of a teacher's class, which gave the right to teach in elementary grades. From the age of 18 she was engaged to Lev Davydov, the future doctor. In order to be an assistant to her husband in his business in the future, Eugene additionally graduated from one-year dental courses. The diploma of these courses was medical. Leo and Eugene wedding in 1910.

Eugenia was a wonderful pianist, which created a musical atmosphere in the house. Very often musical evenings were arranged for friends and relatives. Eugene played, and everyone else sang. The main repertoire is Russian romances. Boris and his younger brother Victor grew up in a house where music sounded. Of course, both studied music: Boris - on the piano, Victor - on the violin.

In 1935, B. L. Davydov graduated from the evening department of the KHMMI branch in Kramatorsk , specializing in “Hoisting-and-transport machines” , and from that year he was a graduate student at the Donetsk Industrial Institute ( Stalino ) (supervisor is Associate Professor F. S. Braslavsky).

In 1939 he defended his candidate, from the same year, associate professor at the Donetsk Industrial Institute.

1941, June, the beginning of the war - sent to Tajikistan , to the city of Stalinabad (Dushanbe), his wife and a one and a half year old daughter, his mother and grandmother, as well as the family of his younger brother Victor, who died in the army in October 1941. He saved them all from imminent death during the occupation of Ukraine.

From 1941 to the beginning of 1942 - the labor front (digging trenches on the outskirts of the city of Stalin ( Donetsk ).

In 1942 - 1944 - chief engineer of the People’s Commissariat of Local Industry of the Tajik SSR ( Dushanbe ).

1944 - Chief Designer of the Donetsk Institute for the Design of Coal Industry Machines in Stalin .

In 1945 he defended his doctoral dissertation.

Since 1948, he headed the department "Mining Machines" at KHGI.

1950 - in the journal “ Coal ” [1] published an article “Prospects and Tasks of the Theory of Mining Hoist”, where he applied the mathematical method of calculus of variations to solve the problem of the diagram of the supply of electricity to the winch when lifting the cage in the mine.

1951 - the article “Responses to the article of B. L. Davydov,“ Prospects and Tasks of the Theory of Mining Ascent ”, was published in the Ugol magazine. He was accused of misinterpreting the Marxist theory when applying the mathematical method of calculus of variations in solving Subsequently, for solving this problem he was called a “brilliant pioneer” in the field of application of the calculus of variations to solve engineering problems.

Petrov Yuri Petrovich “History and philosophy of science. Mathematics, computer engineering, informatics "study guide, 2005, p. 286 [2] :

In 1950, Professor Boris L. Davydov published an article in the Ugol journal, in which, using the calculus of variations and surprisingly witty overcoming all the difficulties of the solution, he found the most favorable diagram of the speed of lifting the cage in the mine (using this diagram could bring significant economic effect), then The following year, the same journal published the responses of five authors to this article, in which the results of B. L. Davydov were most irreconcilably rejected. Having exhausted the technical arguments, the opponents of B. L. Davydov turned to political arguments “Metaphysical attitude of prof. Davydov led him to a far-fetched abstract theory, which seems to be applicable everywhere, but in reality, nowhere. Marxism teaches that there is no abstract truth; truth is always concrete, ”they wrote in their response. After the publication of these sharp reviews, B. L. Davydov stopped further work in the field of application of variational methods. Later, in the 60s of the XX century, when a triumphal procession of variational methods for solving technical problems unfolded, I asked Boris Lvovich if he would like to return to the field of science where he was such a brilliant pioneer? He replied: “It’s too late for me. The forces are gone. Yes, and too heavy memories are associated with my long-standing article. ”

In 1954, he was sent to the Beijing Mining Institute in the PRC . I read special courses to graduate students. Prepared for the defense of 10 graduate students. All defended their thesis. Until the cultural revolution and after it, all his students were professors at universities in the PRC.

From 1957 to 1964 - Head of the Department of Mining Machines, Mine Transport, Kharkov Mining Institute.

From 1964 to 1980 - Head of the Department of "resistance of materials" UZPI .

Married since 1935. Wife - Lyubov Markovna Brodskaya (1915-1985) - mining engineer, two daughters, two granddaughters and a grandson, one great-granddaughter and five great-grandchildren.
