Brother Louis Breyer, art historian.
He graduated from the Faculty of Philology of the Sorbonne (1900), where he studied under V. Brochard and L. Levy-Bruhl . He also attended Henri Bergson's seminars at the College de France .
He taught in lyceums.
In 1908 he defended his diss. about Philo of Alexandria , received a doctorate in literature.
He taught at the universities of Rennes (1909-1912), Bordeaux (1912-1914, 1919) and Paris (1919-1946); in 1925 - at the University of Cairo, in 1936 - at the University of Rio de Janeiro.
A participant in the First World War, after a severe wound, lost his left arm.
He headed the publication of the journal "Revue philosophique".
Member of the Academy of Moral and Political Sciences (1941, took the place of A. Bergson), member of the British Academy (1951).
Among those who influenced him were P.O. Kristeller .
The essence of philosophy for Breye is in a rational explanation of the nature of reality [4] .
As noted by enz. Around the World , his special merit as a historian of philosophy is the study of ancient philosophy, mainly Stoicism and Neoplatonism, and German philosophy.
Breye claimed that Christianity had no influence on the history of philosophy [5] .
He is the author of the fundamental work History of Philosophy (Histoire de la philosophie, 1926-1932, in 7 volumes), from pre-Socratics to the present day, with an addition devoted to Indian philosophy. The author of works on ancient Greek and medieval philosophy.
