Biography

Paul-Emile Charbonneau was born on May 4, 1922 in Saint-Terez de Blenville, in the province of Quebec. He was the son of Benoit Charbonneau and Alice, nee Delvin. He studied at the Lesser Seminary in Saint-Terez de Blenville and the Grand Seminary in Montreal [1] .

May 31, 1947 in Montreal was ordained priest by Archbishop . After the ordination, he taught at the Minor Seminary in Saint-Terez de Blenville. He continued his education at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome. In 1953 he was appointed confessor, and in 1955 - rector of the . From 1956 to 1959 he was the vicar general of the diocese of Saint-Jerome [1] [2] .

On November 15, 1960, Pope John XXIII appointed him auxiliary bishop of Ottawa and nominated him as titular bishop of Thaps. The Episcopal consecration on January 18, 1961 at the Basilica of Our Lady of Ottawa was led by Archbishop Marie-Joseph Lemieux , who was served by Bishop William Joseph Smith and Bishop [2] .

May 21, 1963 was transferred to the pulpit of the Hall, becoming the first bishop of this diocese. He participated in all sessions of the Second Vatican Council , which was held in Rome from October 11, 1962 to December 8, 1965. Later, Paul-Emile Charbonet said that these four years were the best in his life [1] . In the Canadian Episcopal Conference from 1965 to 1970, he headed the Commission on Catholic Action and the Apostolate of the laity, from 1969 to 1970 - the Department of Internal Relations and the Office for the Laity. From 1966 to 1970, he was a member of the Governing Body of the Canadian Episcopal Conference, and from 1967 to 1970, he served on the Theology Commission (now the Doctrine Commission) [2] .

On April 12, 1973, for health reasons, he retired and became the bishop Emeritus of Hall. In the same year he settled in the house of the in Pierrefon. Here he developed a program for the preparation of priests and from 1977 to 1997 held retreats for Francophone priests from all the Catholic dioceses of Canada [2] . Until 2006, he served as chaplain in the home of the Congregation for the Sisters of the Holy Cross in Pierrefon. Then he moved to the house of the in Montreal, where, despite his advanced age, continued his apostolic activity, conducting conferences and publishing articles [1] .

Paul-Emile Charbonne died in Montreal on May 21, 2014. The memorial service for the deceased bishop in the crypt of Oratorio St. Joseph on May 31 of the same year was led by Paul-André Durocher, Archbishop of Gatineau. The epitaph was pronounced by the archbishop-emiré Roger Ebacher. Paul-Emile Charbonneau was buried in Montreal in the cemetery of Notre-Dame-de-Nèges [1] [2] .
