Katarina Suaris Martins ( port. Catarina Soares Martins ; born September 7, 1973) is a Portuguese theater actress [1] , a certified philologist, and a left -wing social and political activist [2] . Chairman (speaker-coordinator) of the Left Block party since 2012.

Biography
The daughter of mathematics teachers who taught for some time on a volunteer basis in Cape Verde after the decolonization of the islands from Portugal. In 1991 she entered the University of Coimbra at the Faculty of Law. After receiving a master's degree from the University of Porto and a Ph.D. in languages and modern literature from the Open University (Lisbon), she devoted herself to theater. She became one of the founders of an avant-garde project called Companhia de Teatro de Visões Úteis , which arose in Porto in 1994. Martins collaborated on this theatrical corpse for 15 years.
An activist of the Left bloc, uniting Trotskyist , Maoist and other radical socialist groups. In 2009, while still non-partisan, she was elected to parliament as the first representative of the Left bloc from Porto, was reelected in 2011 and 2015. On November 11, 2012, Katarina Martins and Juan Semedu were elected co-chairs of the Left bloc, replacing its first leader Francisco Laws . Semedu resigned on November 30, 2013, leaving Martins as the sole “coordinator” and “speaker” on behalf of the party’s collective leadership (Standing Committee of six people) [3] .
The European version of Politico magazine included her in the list of 28 personalities from 28 different countries that “establish politics and shake Europe” [4] . He calls his political idol the African left-wing revolutionary Amilkar Cabral [5] .
