For the second time in NHL history, not a single Canadian club was able to break into the playoffs, which first happened in the 1969/1970 season . [2] Detroit Red Wings participated in the Stanley Cup for the 25th time in a row, which is the longest running series of uninterrupted playoffs and the third in NHL history. [3] [4] For the first time since the 1983 Stanley Cup , the games of the next round started before the completion of all the matches of the previous round of the playoffs. [five]
The final series kicked off on May 30, in which the Pittsburgh Penguins and the San Jose Sharks met. [6] Pittsburgh won the Stanley Cup, beating San Jose in six games. Penguins captain Sidney Crosby was recognized as the most valuable playoff player.
Playoff Format
In total, 16 teams participate in the playoffs, 8 from each conference. Teams that take the first three places in each of the divisions automatically go to the playoffs. The remaining four teams, two from each conference, get on points, getting a wild card . In the first round, the winners of the divisions play with the owners of the wild card, and the teams that took second and third places in their divisions play among themselves. In the first two rounds the advantage of home ice is given to the team that has taken a higher place in the regular season. At the stage of the conference finals and the Stanley Cup finals, the advantage of ice is for the team with the most points (or better in terms of additional indicators with equal points). In the second round, the team re-seeding procedure is not carried out. Each series consists of a maximum of seven games and is played up to four victories, in the formatD- D- G - G -D-G-D [7] .

Florida Panthers (A1) - New York Islanders (UK1)
The first meeting of these two teams in the playoffs. Florida beat Islanders two of three matches in the regular season. [27]
The New York Islanders won the series in six games. Because of the injury, the “islanders” could not take part in the series, the main goalkeeper of the team Yaroslav Galak , whose place in the goal was taken by Thomas Greiss . In the 4th match of the series, the Florida striker Jaromir Jagr scored his 200th point in the Stanley Cup, thus becoming the 5th player in the history of the NHL to whom this line was submitted. [28] The most productive player in the series was Islanders captain John Tavares , who scored 9 (5 + 4) points in six games. “New York Islanders” for the first time since 1993 was able to qualify for the second round of the playoffs. The second meeting in the playoffs of Tampa and Detroit. Their previous meeting took place a year ago, also in the first round, and ended in a Lightning victory in seven matches. In the regular season, the teams held four matches between each other and won two victories. [27]
Tampa won the series against Detroit 4–1. Captain Steven Stemkos and defender Anton Strolman did not participate in the series of lightning due to injuries in the series. In the first two matches, the main goalkeeper of the “wings” was Jimmy Howard , however, after two defeats, Pyotr Mrazek took his place, who in the 3rd match scored a shutout . Newcomer to the Red Wings Dylan Larkin scored his first goal in the NHL playoffs in the second match of the series [30] . Detroit lost for the third year in a row in the first round of the Stanley Cup. [31] The winners became the leader Nikita Kucherov , who scored 8 (5 + 3) points in five matches.

The fifth meeting of these teams in the playoffs, the last of which took place in the quarterfinal of the Eastern Conference of 2008 and ended with the victory of the Flyers in seven matches. The score for both the series in the playoffs and the meetings in the regular season 2015/2016 is a draw, 2–2 [27] .
Washington won the series in six games. In the 3rd match of the series, the Capitals were injured by defender Brooks Orpik , [32] and the Flyers player Pierre-Eduard Bellmar was disqualified for 1 match after pushing Dmitry Orlov [33] on board the starting goalkeeper at Flyers "Was Steve Mason , but after three consecutive defeats, Michal Neuwirth took his place in the goal. After that, “Philadelphia” managed to win two matches in a row and reduced the score in the series to the minimum, however, in game No. 6, “Washington” won with a minimum score and reached the next round. In just three matches, Neuwirt repelled 103 shots, conceiving only twice.

Dallas won the series with a score of 4–2. As the main goalkeeper of the “Dallas”, Kari Lehtonen started the series, however, after losing in the 3rd match, Antti Niemi took the place in the goal. Having missed 7 goals in two matches, the Dallas coaches returned to Lehtonen's goal for the sixth match of the series. The most productive player in the series was the captain of the “stars” Jamie Benn , who scored 10 (4 + 6) points in six games. Due to injury, the Starz forward Tyler Segin [39] and the Minnesota striker Zach Parisis missed the series. [40]

Chicago won eight of the previous eleven playoff series against St. Louis, the last of which was in the first round of the 2014 Western Conference with a score of 4–2. In a stubborn, 7-match series, the St. Louis Blues beat the current Stanley Cup winner . After four matches, “St. Louis” led in the series with a score of 3-1, however, “Chicago” was able to win the next two games and equalize in the series. In the seventh match of the “Blues” on their site, “Blackhawks” won with a score of 3: 2 and for the first time since 2012 went into the second round of the playoffs. The only meeting of these two clubs in the playoffs took place in the quarter-finals of the Western Conference in 2011 and ended with the victory of Nashville in six matches. In the regular season, the Predators won two of the three matches against Dax. [38]
Nashville won seven games. After losing the first two matches, Anaheim coaches replaced John Gibson's defensive goal with Frederick Andersen , after which the ducks managed to win the next three games. However, the Predators were able to first even the score in the series, and then, in the decisive seventh match, achieve a minimum victory and reach the second round of the playoffs. San Jose won the series in seven matches. Sharks striker Logan Couture , who scored 11 (7 + 4) points in seven games, was the most productive player in the series. For the entire series, none of the teams failed to win the away victory. Shark goalkeeper Martin Jones , in the seventh game of the series, won his first career- free dry win as part of the Stanley Cup. The previous one took place at the quarter - finals of the Eastern Conference 2011 , in which Tampa won in seven matches, having recouped from the score 1-3 in the series. In the 2015/2016 regular season, Tampa Bay Lightning won all three matches against the Pittsburgh Penguins. [51]
In the 7-match series, Pittsburgh hockey players turned out to be stronger. In the middle of the 1st period of match No. 1, the main Lightning goalkeeper Ben Bishop was injured and did not appear in the series anymore. At the gate he was replaced by Andrei Vasilevsky . [52] Before the start of the second match, Tampa defender Anton Strolman returned to action after injury. [53] In the fifth match, a place at the Pittsburgh goal was taken by Marc-Andre Fleury [54] , but after the defeat, Matt Murray defended the goal in subsequent matches. Tampa's captain Stephen Stamkos , who had not played since April 1, 2016, when he had a blood clot, was in the seventh decisive match on the ice. Western Conference Finals

The fifth meeting of these two teams in the playoffs. In the previous four episodes, each team scored two victories. The last time the teams met in the first round of the playoffs in 2012 , where St. Louis won in five matches. Sharks won two of the three games of the regular season 2015/2016 against Blues. [56]
San Jose beat St. Louis in six games. The second and third matches of the series ended with “dry” victories of “sharks”, 4-0 and 3-0, respectively. Thanks to this, Martin Jones became the first goalkeeper in the history of Sharks, who managed to make two playoffs in a row in the playoffs [57] , and St. Louis suffered two consecutive dry defeats in the playoffs for the first time in its history. [58] After which the place at the “Blues” gate was taken by Jake Allen , however, after losing in the fifth match 3–6, St. Louis coaches returned Brian Elliott . In the 6th match of the San Jose series, he confidently wins with a score of 5: 2 and for the first time in his history becomes the champion of the conference.
