Perceval Wally ( French: Perceval le Gallois ) is a film directed by Eric Romer , released on October 8, 1978 ^{[K 1]} .

Content

Story

An off-series film by Romer, and his second film on historical subjects. A screen version of Chretien de Troyes ' unfinished novel , Perceval, or the Legend of the Grail ^{[K 2]} .

The plot of the picture, mainly follows the literary source. Young Welshman , the son of Widow Perceval , is hunting in the woods and meets the knights of King Arthur. Struck by their appearance, the young man from whom his mother hid the existence of chivalry takes strangers for angels. When the error is clarified, Perceval goes to the court of King Arthur to become a knight.

During his wanderings, the Welshman, because of his naivety and ignorance, insults the virgin belonging to the Proud of Lalande ^{[K 3]} , kills the Red Knight, who insulted King Arthur, comes into conflict with Seneschal Kei , and is trained in martial arts and courtesy by Gurneman from Goor ^{[ K 4]} , saves the beautiful Blancheflor, who is besieged by King Klamadek Ostrovnoy and his seneschal Agengeron in a city called Beaurepaire ^{[K 5]} . Then he finds himself in the magical castle of the King Fisherman , where during a meal they carry a bleeding spear in front of him, and then a virgin carrying the Grail passes. The result of Gurneman’s lessons is Perceval’s fatal mistake - An unasked question.

Having left the magical castle, Perceval meets the Disgusting girl , reproaching him for stupidity, and predicting that an Unasked question will cost him grief and long wanderings. King Arthur, to whom Perceval sends the knights defeated by him, decides to go in search of a hero. Upon meeting, Perceval knocks Kay out of the saddle of the Seneschal, taking revenge for the maiden offended by this knight (“the maiden who laughs”), and then gets acquainted with another model of chivalry - Gavein .

This is followed by a story about the exploits of Gawain. Accused of betrayal by the king of Escavalon, the knight goes to his court to clear himself by a duel, and on his way arrives at the castle of Tybalt of Tintagelsky, where the tournament takes place at this time. Gawain doesn’t take part in squabbles, because he does not want to be at risk of injury before a responsible fight. Tybalt's eldest daughter makes fun of him, and then insults and punches the younger sister, the virgin with short sleeves, who stood up for the stranger. She resorts to the defense of Gawain, who is unable to refuse. Having entered the tournament, he knocks out a knight wearing the color of his older sister.

He then finds himself in the possession of King Escavalon. They do not know each other's faces, and the monarch invites the wandering knight to stay in his palace, where he closely meets his sister. Identified by a singleavassor , Gawain is attacked by the townspeople, fighting off them with a sword provided by the maiden, and hiding behind a shield with a chessboard. The king, who returned from the hunt, orders the people to disperse, since Gawain, although the accused, is currently in the position of a guest who enjoys immunity.

Then the narrative returns to Perceval, who has wandered for five years in search of the Grail, and has forgotten about God. Once on Good Friday, the pilgrims send him to a hermit, before whom the knight confesses his sins. The elder informs him of the death of his mother, and reveals several secrets, including explaining the meaning of the Grail - the chalice , in which, after the Crucifixion of the Savior, True blood was collected. On this, Chrétien de Trois's novel breaks off, but Romer finishes the film with a reproduction of the medieval Latin mystery of the Passion of Christ .

Making a movie

Romer’s script exactly follows the text of the novel, but the director was not satisfied with the standard prosaic translation from Old French , and he made his own, poetic. In the article Note sur la traduction et sur la mise en scène de Perceval ( L'Avant-scène du cinéma 221 (1979), he explained his position as follows:

Contrary to popular belief, poetry is much easier to understand than prose. These octosyllabs are closer to the modern language, even the language of a six-year-old child, than the elaborate prose that modern French readers have to turn to when they want to read Chretien de Troyes text. Popular literature still rhymes. Rhyme is found in poems, mainly eight-footed ones, with which our songs and musical comedies are written ^{[K 6]} .

At the same time, in his translation, Romer retained some medieval passages and individual words from Old French, more or less understandable to modern Frenchmen ^{[K 7]} , in order to create a sense of archaism ^[2] .

The director abandoned the idea of interpreting the Wagner -style Parsifal novel or the like, choosing a deliberately theatrical production, “which boldly turns its back on cinematic realism” ^[1] , and is inspired in part by medieval scenography, and partly by modern circular theater ^[1] .

The filming pavilion in the center was an empty arena, like a stage where tournaments and equestrian evolution took place, and around this closed field were decorations for indoor and outdoor scenes ^[1] .

The music for the film, written by Guy Robert , is styled as polyphonic medieval, and is performed on authentic instruments: the Saracen guitar , rebec , lute , transverse flute , shalmei , shalyumo ^[2] .

Awards and nominations

The film received the Méliès Award in 1979, and was nominated in 1980 for the César Award in the categories of " Best Cinematography " ( Nestor Almendros ) and "For Best Sound" (Jean-Pierre Rue).

The public did not succeed (only 145 thousand views in France), becoming the biggest commercial failure since the failure of the Sign of the Lion ^[3] .
