Biography and Creativity
Parents were Polish Jews, prisoners of Nazi concentration camps ( Auschwitz and Auschwitz-2 Birkenau ), released in 1944 , moved to Sweden , then to the USA . Many of Art’s relatives also fell victim to the Holocaust : his aunt, her children, and Art’s brother, who lived with his aunt. Art grew up in Queens (New York), graduated from the High School of Art and Design in Manhattan . In 1968, he suffered a severe nervous breakdown, ended up in a psychiatric clinic, and his mother committed suicide in the same year.
In the 1960s and 1970s, he became one of the masters of the "underground comic strip" that had spread in this era in San Francisco , New York, Chicago and was close to the youth counter-culture . In 1986, he published the first comic book volume about the Holocaust and Nazi concentration camps, Mouse: A Survivor's Tale . Jews, including the artist’s father, were represented there in the form of mice, Germans in the form of cats, Poles in the form of pigs, Americans in the form of dogs. For the first time in the world, the comic was such a resounding success, the book has been translated into many languages. In 1991 , the second volume of Mouse was released. The comic received the Pulitzer Prize ( 1992 ), an exhibition was dedicated to him in the New York Museum of Modern Art ( English MOMA ).
Spiegelman collaborated with New Yorker magazine. In 2004, he released the comic strip “In the Shadow of Destroyed Towers,” which was based on the events of September 11th . In 2006, he responded to the scandal that erupted around caricatures of the prophet Muhammad , giving a dramatic review of the fate of artists from Honore Daumier to Georges Gros , who engaged in political caricature, in a Harpers magazine article.
Together with his wife, French artist and writer Francoise Mouli, he composed several anthologies of comics and gives public lectures on this art form. He sharply criticized George W. Bush ’s policy and the war in Iraq .
