History
Notre Dame Island was built in ten months from 15 million tons of rock extracted during the construction of the Montreal Metro in 1965 . It was created for World Exposition 67 , the centenary of Canada .
Almost all of the pavilions were demolished in 1975 to clear space for a long rowing canal for the 1976 Olympics . The Montreal Olympic rowing track is still the largest artificial rowing canal in North America. The former pavilions of France and Quebec were destroyed for the construction of the Montreal Casino ; a large gambling establishment owned and operated by the Quebec government.
In the park area on the western part of the island there is a small lake with a beach, open during the summer season.
In 1980, the island’s landscaping and landscaping were accelerated when the island hosted the Floralies Internationales , a horticultural exhibition of plants from dozens of countries.
The park hosted the 1986 World Canoe and Canoe Championships .
Offseason
In autumn and spring, visitors to Notre Dame are mostly casino players. In the coldest time of winter, the ice of the pool is used by skaters as a skating rink .
