Description

This musical instrument is a longitudinal flute with a short wooden trunk and 6 game holes, thereby resembling the chromatic diagonal kaval flute [2] . The length of the tool varies from 24 to 35 cm.

The tool is made of walnut, dogwood , ash or maple [3] .

In its sound, the little cord covers the chromatic scale (two octaves), with the exception of the first note of the lower octave [4] . In the lower case, the little cord gives a soft and pleasant sound, and in the upper case, the sound is sharp and piercing [4] , a slightly hissing timbre.

The upper hole into which air enters has narrow sharp edges [5] .

There are six holes on the front side of the bobbin, in addition, there are varieties of tools with seven holes [6] .

The name of the instrument comes from the Macedonian word "dumb", that is, hollow. It also has much in common with the Arabic wooden wind instrument Hasbah used in Tunisia and Algeria [6] .

Shupelka has a monolithic body and can not be configured.

Classic playing position - the three middle fingers of each hand lie on the holes, the instrument is located at an angle of 45 ° to the vertical. It is used both for solo improvisations and as part of instrumental orchestras.
