Ayan (tributary of Salgir)

Title

According to one version, the name Ayan is taken from the Crimean Tatar language and translates as “ explicit ” [2] . According to another, the name is of Greek origin and means "St. John" ( ay - the abbreviated form from ayos - "saint", Jan - a shortened form of the name Janis - John) [3] .

Geography

The source of the Ayan river - the Ayan source (Ayan source) - is located at the exit of the Ayan cave , on the northern slopes of the Chatyr-Dag mountain iala at an altitude of 486 m above sea level [4] . Source Ayan - the most powerful karst source of Chatyr-Dag with a water flow rate of 0.02 - 30.8 m³ / s (depending on the time of year) [5] .

The Ayan river in the upper reaches flows mainly to the north along a narrow gorge. At an altitude of 404 m above sea level, the Ayan reservoir was formed , with a volume of 3.9 million m³ [5] [6] . After the dam, the river flows towards the northwest.

The mouth of the river is located in the village of Zarechnoye [4] . Near the estuary, a bridge is thrown across the river on the highway 35A-001 ( Simferopol - Alushta ).

Ayan, when merged with Salgir, gives almost 40% of the total flow [5] .

In some sources, it is considered the upper course of Salgir [5] [2] .
