Pirer studied law and economics at the Friedrich Alexander University of Erlangen . His career at Siemens AG began in 1969 . In 1977, he transferred to a subsidiary of Kraftwerk Union AG (KWU). In 1989 , he becomes president of KWU and a member of the board of directors of Siemens AG. In 1992, Pirer replaced Karlheinz Kaske as CEO and was on it until January 2005, when he was replaced by Klaus Kleinfeld .
In addition to his activities at Siemens AG, von Pirer is on the board of directors of companies such as Bayer AG and Volkswagen AG . He also worked as an adviser to the Federal Government and personally Gerhard Schroeder and Angela Merkel .
