Direct work on the album began in January 2015. It began with the fact that Pop sent Homme a text message asking about joint cooperation. After talking on the phone, Pop sent some textual notes and notes on working with David Bowie . Three months later, Homme wrote an answer and they agreed on a joint recording of songs in the studio. By the beginning of the studio work, the musicians did not have completed songs written in advance, but only developments and ideas for their joint implementation. Iggy Pop described the record as “discussing what happens when you become worthless and reconcile with your legacy” [4] [6] .
The work on nine songs of the album [4] [6] was conducted from January 12 to March 9, 2015 [7] at the Rancho De La Luna studios in Joshua Tree , California, where the musicians recorded for about two weeks, and at Pink Duck Studios in the city Burbank, about a week. Pop and Homme funded the record from personal funds [8] . Dean Fertitta recorded the guitar and keyboards, while Matt Helders recorded the drum parts. Homme later said that preparing for the release of the Post Pop Depression album was one of those things that helped him deal with the psychological consequences of the attack in the Bataklan concert hall in November 2015 [4] [6] .
The first song from the upcoming album, Gardenia , was unveiled on January 21, 2016 at the American talk show “ Late Show with Stephen Colbert ” [6] [9] . The composition immediately fell to 26th position in the list of “Adult Alternative Songs”.
The full Post Pop Depression was released on March 18, 2016 [10] . The album debuted at number 17 on the Billboard 200, which was Iggy Pop's highest ever U.S. charts. The album took similar positions in other countries. By this time, Pop and Homme had already begun a tour in support of the album, performing March 9 in Los Angeles. It was followed by a European tour in May of that year [11] [12] . During the tour, Pop and Homme were also joined by Dean Fertita and Matt Helders involved in the recording, as well as Matt Sweeney as bass player and Troy Van Leuven, accompanying the guitar [4] [6] .
