Distribution

Endemic of the island of Madagascar . The provinces of Antsiranan and Mahajanga (in forests up to 937 m; found in dead wood) [1] .

Description

The length of the workers is from 5 to about 1 cm ( soldiers ). It differs from closely related species in its larger size, one-color black body, and the fact that the level of the pro-mesonotum is higher than the level of the propodeum, the shape of the nodule is convex in front and straight behind, as well as morphometric proportions. Head Length (CL) 1.96-3.68 mm; chest length (ML) 3.49-4.18 mm. The main body color is black or black-brown. The upper lateral edges of the propodeum are bordered or with a sharp keel, the propodeal surface is concave, the anterolateral corners of the pronotum are bordered, the anterior coxae are larger than the width of the mesopleuron of the chest, the propodeal dorsum sharply goes down to the junction with the petiol. Mandibles with 6 teeth, increasing in size to the apex. Antennae 12-segmented and attached at some distance from the posterior edge of the clypeus. The maxillary palps consist of 6 segments, and the labial palps consist of 4. A pro-mesonal seam is developed. Propodeal lobes and metapleural glands are absent. On the middle and hind tibia one spur. The stalk between the breast and the abdomen consists of one segment ( petiolus ), bearing a vertical scale. The sting is missing. The species was first described in 1897 by Auguste Trout , and its valid status was confirmed during an audit in 2016 by the Malagasy worldmecologist Jean- Claude Rakotonirina, Madagascar Biodiversity Center , Antananarivo , Madagascar ) and American entomologists Sandor Candor Chandorő Brian Fisher ( Brian Lee Fisher ; California Academy of Sciences , San Francisco , USA ). Included in the species group Camponotus edmondi , and previously included in the various subgenus of camponotus : Myrmentoma (Forel, 1912), Orthonotomyrmex (Forel, 1914), Myrmepinotus (Santschi, 1921), Myrmepinotus (Emery, 1925) [1] [2] .
